Characters of Dead Hearts
By Ford Nichols
The "Hero"
Clover Sparks
Clover Sparks was raised by a single mother, her father leaving the two of them when she was just a child. So yeah, needless to say, she's got some issues. Clover is the main character of our story. I mean she needs to be anyhow, seeing's how she's the one telling it. She's a bit of a drama queen, that's just how she works. But then again, if I were the last of my species I think I might be a tad angsty too. Ah yes. "Last of her species". Excuse my bluntness. Yes. Clover Sparks is the last of her species. The only Nephilim to live. But you're not supposed to know that yet. Let's have a quick look-see at one of her little shpeals, shall we?
"I don’t like being alone. I never have. Although, honestly, I can't think much of anyone who does. Y’know people say death is one of the greatest fears across America, next to public speaking or something I think. Now I don’t necessarily think that’s true. I don’t think people are afraid of dying; people are afraid of what comes after death. I think that we fear what comes next. Because, what if nothing comes next? That’s the ultimate fear. That nothing comes after. That we just end, abruptly. That all at once we’re just…over. So no, people don’t fear dying. We fear ending.
I don’t much fear death as much as some people do. I think worrying endlessly about death is sort of pointless. So I try to worry about life. Y’know sometimes death seems more welcoming than life. It would definitely be less confusing. I think death might hurt less than life. No emotions during death I don’t think. People say death is like falling asleep. I like sleeping. So who knows, maybe I’ll like death too?"
